The Forest is Reborn: 250 New Spruce Trees Planted near Aleko hut!

On May 10, 2025, the Surya Foundation, in partnership with the State Forestry Enterprise – Sofia, took another step in its long-term mission to reforest and restore Bulgaria’s woodlands. As part of a specially organized volunteer campaign near the Aleko hut on Vitosha Mountain, 250 young spruce trees were planted — a species native to this high-altitude region and vital to the area’s ecological balance.

The site chosen for reforestation presented serious challenges: steep terrain, rocky soil, and limited accessibility. A few years ago, powerful winds and heavy snowfalls brought down dozens of centuries-old spruces in this exact area, leaving behind barren patches and disrupting the natural forest ecosystem.

Despite the difficult conditions, volunteers participated with great enthusiasm. Armed with tools, determination, and a strong desire to make a difference, the team managed to breathe new life into this part of the mountain in just one day. Guided by forestry experts, each sapling was planted with care and attention to the soil and surrounding environment to give it the best possible chance for successful growth and long-term survival.

“This is more than just reforestation — it’s an act of responsibility toward the future. With every tree we plant, we give the mountain a chance to breathe, the forest a chance to be reborn, and ourselves an opportunity to become more conscious and connected to nature,” shared the organizers from the Surya Foundation.

This initiative is part of the foundation’s broader mission to promote environmental stewardship in Bulgaria. Its goal extends beyond tree planting — it aims to raise public awareness about the importance of forests, biodiversity, and personal responsibility in the fight against climate change. The forest is growing. And with it — so is our responsibility.
