Volunteer Action: Caring for the Young Forest near Aleko Hut

On June 22, 2025, a group of volunteers from the Surya Foundation returned to the area near Aleko Hut, where earlier this spring we planted hundreds of young spruce saplings in collaboration with the State Forestry Department – Sofia. The goal of our new visit to the forest was to take care of the already planted young trees—because caring for nature doesn’t end with planting; it only begins there.

Seven enthusiastic volunteers, including a future mother and 4-year-old Chris—our youngest participant in a volunteer action so far—joined the initiative with energy and a strong desire to help. With hoes in hand, we cleared the grass around each sapling and loosened the soil to improve access to sunlight and moisture for the roots. This is crucial during the first few years of a young tree’s development.

To our great joy, we also discovered naturally sprouted conifer saplings – a sign that even after devastating natural disasters, nature finds a way to recover. All we need to do is give it a helping hand.

The atmosphere during the action was warm and inspiring. Little Chris not only brought smiles but also made a genuine contribution with his childlike energy and eagerness to help. Moments like these remind us that the most meaningful lessons are passed on through personal example—and that every generation has a role to play in protecting nature.

We thank everyone who took part from the bottom of our hearts. Together, we’re not just planting trees—we’re cultivating a future, a sense of responsibility, and hope.

Follow our calendar for upcoming volunteer initiatives and join us—because from small acts of care, great forests grow.
