For the Foundation

Surya Foundation is a non-governmental organization. It is dedicated to making a positive contribution in Bulgaria and in the world. The foundation was founded by a motivated young team that is deeply committed to the well-being of people and nature.
We know that there are many people who have the same values and beliefs as us. And we believe that together we will be able to create a brighter tomorrow for everyone!

What does Surya mean?

“Surya” is a word that carries with it a ray of light from antiquity. It is the source of the old Thracian “sur(a)”, meaning sun, light and radiance.

In the past, our ancestors called the Sun God Surya, a symbol of the life and energy that the new year gives us. In Bulgarian traditions, the word is preserved as “surva”, which is pronounced during the Survakane custom – a ritual in which children bless homes for health and fertility.

Each ‘Surva’ uttered is like an ancient prayer to the sun, preserved and passed down through the generations to continue to bring light and warmth to our homes.
